1. Plan Your Good Neighbour Fence Project

A. Check Your Local Council / Shire Fencing Requirements

Each council has unique requirements when it comes to building a new fence or replacing an old fence. Check your local council or shire's website to get a clear understanding of any rules that may apply when planning your fencing project. For example, fencing above a certain height may require engineering involvement or council approval. There may also be encumbrances or a minimum distance to maintain from other sheds or buildings. We recommend obtaining a clear understanding of any local council area requirements to plan your project accordingly.

B. Talk To Your Neighbours

Whether you are replacing an existing fence or putting in a brand new fence, if your fence is on the border of your property and a neighbour, you will need to discuss the project with them before taking any action. We recommend involving your neighbours early in the project, particularly if you would like them to contribute towards the cost of the fence. You will need to reach an agreement on the details of the new fence before commencing your new fence project. We recommend seeking your own legal advice on how to best manage any disputes with your neighbours. Your local council may also be able to assist with managing this process.

C. Measure

Once you are comfortable you understand your local council requirements and have the support of your neighbours, measure the perimeter of the fence boundary from corner to corner. Ensure you record the total of each straight length. For example, if you have 3 lengths around your property, 10m x 8m x 10m, it's important you record all 3 lengths, not just a total of 28m. This will be important when it comes to having your good neighbour fencing panels cut to the required lengths for each side of your property boundary.
